Studying Away From Home

Funding is available to assist students who need to study at a college which is not within reasonable daily travelling distance from their home.

This funding can take two forms. The exisiting residential bursary funding which is available for those students attending one of the 51 Specialist Residential Colleges or Centres offering courses in Agriculture, Horticulture and Art and Design. This funding continues under current arrangements in which the LSC makes direct allocations to the colleges. Secondly, funding is available via a national Residential Pilot Scheme. This pays residential support to full time learners undertaking FE courses of at least level 3 or above, or exceptionally a course with level 2 content for a further education qualification that meets a specific job requirement. The fund can be accessed from the scheme if there is no other similar provision available locally. It is managed on behalf of the LSC by Manchester City Council (MCC).

It is to be noted that, as from September 2004, 8 of the 51 Residential Speciailist Colleges have agreed to take part in the national scheme but at a local level. LSC will continue to make direct allocations to these colleges.

Students wishing to take advantage of either of these forms of funding would need to contact the Student Support Officer at the college or institution they need to attend.
